Taking Five With The Moondoggies’ Kevin Murphy

Kevin Murphy fronts the Seattle band, The Moondoggies. He and his group of minstrels will be playing the inaugural Timbrrr Winter Music Festival in Leavenworth, WA this January. The Monarch had a chance to chat with Kevin about winter drinks, his favorite gigs of the year and more!

Jake Uitti: What do you think Timbrrr might bring out of The Moondoggies?

Kevin Murphy: If we’re outdoors you’ll get a little more vocal vibrato from shivering in the cold. I’m not sure though, we’ve had our share of freezing practice spaces so perhaps we were just training for this moment. Honestly I don’t know what to expect!

JU: Are you going to hit up the hot toddy garden?

KM: It’s safe to say I will be…

JU: Do you have a favorite winter drink?

KM: I DO. It sounds gross, but I like it. It’s Kracken, Egg Nog and Seven up.

JU: How has the last six months treated the band since the album was put out?

KM: Good – we did some touring so it was nice to wander around the country for a while. We had some amazing days in New Orleans, met some really good folks out on the road, too.

JU: Do you have any new songs in the works?

KM: Yeah we always do. Unfinished songs floating around, new ideas. We always dig up old songs too and see if we can tweak ‘em.

JU: What’s been your favorite show you’ve played in the last year?

KM: There’s been some awesome ones: Our last night in Boise was special with Rose Windows, they’re great folks. We just played for Crosby, Stills and Nash, that was insane… and there were a couple of really great house shows, too.

JU: What’s coming up for the band?

KM: That’s a good question…
