The Monarch Drinks With Safeco

Desperate for shelter and disheveled by a cruel battery of autumn winds, the truth about baseball in Seattle was never clearer to me than when I was on my way to Safeco Field on the last Saturday of September 2013 – it’s a struggle. On the field, you know who the Seattle Mariners are? They’re a chronic complainer of a friend who, deep down, you know you hang out with because you pity them.
Pacific Aggression with Shaun Scott

Shaun Scott is a Seattle-based director and writer. I got a chance to see him work, arranging the lighting, the sound, the camera angles, for his new film Pacific Aggression at Grand Illusions Cinema in July. Scott is an avid sports fan and walks about town as one of the most dapper fellows in the city. He is tall, articulate and open to conversations about art, music and libations. His new film focuses on two people separated by a continent though who find themselves meandering closer to each other by the day. The Monarch Review had a chance to chat […]

It’s November in America again, and I can’t think of two films so significant, loaded and well-done as “Rocky†and “Taxi Driver†to use as a centerpiece in these next few pages for a few reflections about a country in its holiday and election seasons. But before we get into all that, a digression:
On Being Nominated For A ‘Genius Award’ – Shaun Scott

It dawned on me awhile back that my most beloved professional and recreational activities in life all share the word “shootâ€: pool, basketball, and especially film.
Can You Say That About Your Team – Shaun Scott

June is a special month for me, because that’s when I start production work on my feature films. This is my 4th year of writing, directing, and editing my own material, and the mental grind of living up to the expectations I set out for myself is a labor of love that demands an occasional respite. I think we’re all in need of parallel social realities with rules and archetypes and characters that comment on our own, that help us form and reinforce our beliefs. For some people, it’s “Twin Peaksâ€; for some people it’s garden-variety gossip; for me it’s […]
