At Women Against Street Harassment, we tend to focus, as the name implies, on women. But in 2015, with fatal police shootings approaching four hundred, in addition to the nine dead in the Charleston Church shooting, and a string of black churches burning in the south, it feels crucial that we discuss street harassment and public violence within a human context. These acts of violence and arson have left many people of color feeling that there is no safe place, not in the streets, not in their homes, schools, or churches. WASH sat down with poet and Stranger Genius Award […]

The Monarch Drinks With Elissa Washuta

From the first time I saw her read, I had an enormous writer’s crush on Elissa Washuta. The manuscript from which she read, dealing in dark dialects of rape, psychopathology, and Écriture feminine, would soon become My Body Is A Book Of Rules (Red Hen Press), a memoir as whip-smart and courageous as it is lyrically and syntactically gorgeous. Washuta herself possesses this one-of-a-kind combination of blistering intelligence, unrepentant moxie, unassailable integrity, and ambrosial beauty. I always feel a little bit nervous around her. I’ve parked in a well-lit spot closest to the exit and remain hyper-aware of my surroundings. In my interactions with others, I […]
An Interview With Kate Lebo

I’m standing outside Neighbor Lady, peering as inconspicuously as possible through the glass at Kate Lebo, who I am supposed to be meeting for drinks. Already, I am three minutes late. I can see her sitting at the bar in a tight black t-shirt and jeans, holding a sweating tumbler of bourbon to her cheek. She is laughing, already making friends. I’m feeling a little bit nervous.
The Ruins – Piper Daniels

There were things neighbors wouldn’t notice about the two-story cedar on Pierce Street. Things beyond the bright teal door, garlanded by evergreens and, in the spring, deep purple impatiens (also known as touch-me-nots) peeking shyly from beds of mulch. Â

1.) We walk to the beach, lie among the driftwood. Do this because it’s easier here on your heart, sipping whiskey from paper cups, skipping rocks the sea returns.Â
The answer isn't poetry, but rather language
