The Evil Eye: A Love Story – Andrew Harris

Truth be told, Benjamin Verdoes never set out to write, let alone record, a solo album. Originally written for an audience of one, his girlfriend Ifrah, these particular works were – no, are – so intensely personal that showing them to anyone but a few select friends, was, as Verdoes puts it, “the scariest thing I’ve ever thought of.†The 11 gifts on The Evil Eye are autobiographical in a way that Verdoes’ previous works have not been, proving a new challenge to the veteran songwriter. Â
Ayron Jones

Ayron Jones is a crazy-good guitar player. Recently he and his band teamed up with Anthony Ray – better known as Sir-Mix-A-Lot – to put out the band’s first full-length. The Monarch had a chance to catch up with Ayron and talk about the process of putting together this new highly-anticipated record.Â
The Comettes at Half-Neumos

While it’s actually just regular Neumos with a skeleton crew (remember this detail, it’ll come up later), and an added floor-to-ceiling curtain, Half-Neumos is a land of intrigue and dreams. There are a couple tables with stools in the back upon which candles flicker, and the normally oversized Neumos feels more like a small jazz club than the legendary rock venue that it is. I discovered all of this the moment I stepped into darkness, with absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into.Â

Hello and welcome back to our coverage of Bumbershoot. If you missed Day 1 click here, or Day 2 click here. Enjoy! (also check us out on Twitter here!) Cascadia ’10 I had no idea what to expect when I set off to check out Cascadia ’10 at the Tunein Stage. When I got done shooting and had a chance to listen, I was instantly impressed. It had a soul flavor, a very “Isaac Hayes†sense of funk, but with the Afrobeat feel upon which they hang they’re collective hats. These guys swing, and I instantly fell for them. The […]

Hello and welcome back to our coverage of Seattle’s Bumbershoot music and arts festival. If you missed Day 1, check it out here! And without further ado… Kithkin The four lost boys of Kithkin appear to have washed up randomly on the same island and began banging on things. Mistakenly announced as the “Canadian Youth Tribe,†the quartet of forest creatures announced the start of Day 2 with a motherfucking crash. A thunderous, name-making performance by these guys has been long overdue, and they picked a great moment to follow through, opening the second day of Bumbershoot with a sun-drenched […]

Hanging with The Comettes – Andrew Harris
Thursday, August 29, 2013 10:15 — 0 Comments
The Comettes are like human marijuana. I’ve been sitting with the band, comprised of Tim Sunshine, Jettie Wilce, and Sager Small, for about 9 seconds and we’re already laughing and giving each other shit like old friends. There’s an energy amongst these three that is absolutely inspiring, resulting in a quick interview turning into myself and The Comettes sitting around Cafe Petirosso like high school buddies.

Kris Orlowski is a Seattle musician armed with a warm, crooning baritone. He’s made the rounds at summer festivals and gigs about the city, and, as he prepares for Bumbershoot, Kris managed to take the time to chat with The Monarch’s Andrew Harris about his writing style, his favorite northwest bands and much more!Â
The answer isn't poetry, but rather language
