Seahawk Talk with Caleb Thompson and Evan Flory-Barnes
After the Seahawks won the Superbowl, I asked Monarchians Caleb Thompson and Evan Flory-Barnes a few questions about the game, the players and the mentality of the winning team. Enjoy!
–Jake Uitti, Managing Editor
What did you think about the dynamic of the game?
Caleb Thompson: There’s all this talk about Peyton Manning and how the Seahawks have to stop him, but no one mentioned that he’s just one guy. With the Seahawks there isn’t just one guy.
Evan Flory-Barnes: With the Hawks, there’s not this archetypal quarterback. Instead there’s all these dudes and you get behind them and they’re all exciting individuals.
CT: The only guy that had a big name before the season was Percy Harvin but he got hurt and had to be rehabilitated and he eventually came back and he returned the kick off for the touchdown to start the second half.
What’d you think of Russell’s play?
EFB: He played awesome, like he’s one of those – he’s so on the edge with everything he does, there’s an improvisational quality with how he plays and that’s when something happens. You can really feel it.
When did you know the Hawks had won?
CT: When Percy returned the touchdown to start the second half. But I didn’t know that until now! Usually I’m sort of a wreck watching the games. I’m a nervous fan…
What was your favorite play?
EFB: It was the pass to Kearse. He spun off defenders twice – that, oh my god, I was so pumped up. I do love that it was a beat down of Denver (laughs).
CT: That’s what I wanted too. I didn’t want to have another fucking game like with the Saints and the 49ers. I got to completely enjoy this one.
EFB: What’s so great about this season is that they were talking about it last season, they didn’t succumb to the type of paralyzing doubt from the loss that people have had around these parts – this small pond mentality, this idea that it’s not for us. We have the cats!
CT: Your point about people who kind of diminish – we had a friend call up the Pub tonight and he wanted to hang but he kept asking if I wanted him to hang out but you could tell he wanted to be with people and there was this weird exchange where he wanted me to say I wanted him there. Anyway, so he came out with us finally and he was wasted and the dude is fragile and it made for a weak dynamic where I’m trying to connect and I don’t want to be ruled by the fear he’s showing and I’m seeing him as the embodiment of fear.
EFB: Doubt. Yes. That’s what all these cats speak about, but they do it through the lens of confidence. The Doug Baldwin interview, it’s the calling out but in a respectful way and the proof is in the pudding. We won the fucking Super Bowl! The paralyzing doubt, the dysfunctional doubt where you have to take a back seat – none of the Hawks take a back seat to their talent or themselves as a team. So there may be doubt in the moment but not in a way of being. That win was like if you had any doubt, put it to rest. Peyton was like, who the fuck are these dudes? I looked at Denver and said, they can’t hang. Denver was done before they started.
The answer isn't poetry, but rather language
