One Super Important Question For Spekulation

Rapper and producer Spekulation is playing his fist show in some time on Saturday, Feb. 8th, at the Columbia City Theater. He’s coming off a crazy week where his song “Bout That Action” received a quarter million plays on his Soundcloud page alone, along with plays on Fox, the NFL Network and KEXP. To catch up with Spek as he prepares for his show this weekend, we wanted to ask him One Super Important Question…

Jake Uitti: After a busy week and all the positive response to your song “Bout That Action”, how are you doing and what are you preparing for your show Feb 8th?

Spek: What a week!  I’m not even really sure what just happened, to be honest.  Seven days ago I was in the studio getting tracks ready for this upcoming show when I heard the Marshawn Lynch interview on youtube… a week later, I’ve stumbled onto the biggest record in town, and now I guess it’s time to finally go back and finish getting those tracks ready for the show!

Saturday’s show at Columbia City Theater will be our first time back on stage after hiding out in the studio for the last six months.  That being said, these last couple weeks have been about getting back in shape, lots of rapping while riding an exercise bike and rehearsing songs I’ve haven’t performed in a long time.  But we’ve got string and horn sections coming with us this time, so I think the energy will take care of itself.  There are a ton of very talented emcees on the bill, so I’m just hoping to hold my own and keep up with the band, which has somehow managed to grow even bigger in our off-season.

There’s also been the question of whether or not we should incorporate “Bout That Action” into our live set, and I think it’d be kinda foolish not to, so we’ve been tinkering with it the last few days (we didn’t want to start arranging it before sunday, lest we jinx the thing for the whole city).  Doing a song like that is tough at a rap show, since it’s essentially an instrumental record…which is why we’re grateful and honored to announce that we’ll be joined on stage by none other than Geo from Blue Scholars, who will be performing his remix of the remix along with the band… and I might just have to spit a verse too, because narcissism.
