Marco Collins 15 Best Seattle Summer Jams 2014
Hall of Fame DJ, Marco Collins, is beloved by us Monarch folk. He started a musical movement in the 90’s and continues to be a friend of all things (Seattle) music today. His movie, The Glamour and the Squalor, all about his life within music scene, will be finished Thursday – the final shots for the film to be done at Chop Suey. In order to celebrate Marco, his movie and Seattle music, we thought we’d offer the DJ’s list of 15 Best Seattle Summer Jams 2014. ENJOY!
1. Odesza- “Say My Name (feat. Zyra)” Don’t know much about these guys but I am really obsessed with this record!
2. Katie Kate- “Sadie Hawkins” One of my favorite records of the year! KK has not only arrived, but she’s done it her way.
3. Sam Lachow- “Action Figures” Sammy Lachow will own this town in a year. Mark my words.
4. Fences (w/ Macklemore)- “Arrows” This is the most unlikely hit of the year.
5. Kris Orlowski- “Carolina” Kris Orlowski knows how to write a hook. Try getting this one outta your head!
6. Hobosexual- “Mechagodmothra” This record came out last year, but they have just now reached critical mass. 2014 is the year of the Hobo! #gozer4lyfe
7. Shabazz Palaces- “Forerunner Foray” SP redefining hip hop in a “newly legalized” way.
8. Blake Lewis- “Disco In Space” This song is so tight it makes hipster jeans look loose!
9. Raz Simone- “They’ll Speak” My favorite hip hop track of 2014. Raz moves the masses to tears WITHOUT a fuckin beat! Respect.
10. Hightek Lowlives- “Sometimes” MY NEW OBSESSION! Soul-Fi! If Otieno Terry and Kjell Nelson don’t take over the world in a year, I’ll quit and start doing real estate… and we both know that ain’t gonna happen.
11. Motopony- “Get Down” Daniel Blue has several songs on the new record about his struggle with sobriety and I’ll be damned if EVERY ONE of them doesn’t hit the nail on the head.
12. U.S.F.- “Outtamind (feat. Fatha Green)” I love that USF is experimenting with a twisted version of deep house. Fuck Grunge.
13. Murder City Devils- “Pale Disguise” Pure unadulterated punk rock via NYC and Detroit circa 79.
14. Smokey Brights- “Taste The Blood” This record is gonna shock people with how fuckin good it is. Another fave of ’14.
15. Beat Connection- “Hesitation” Band member changes don’t seem to slow these guys down one bit.
