Freedom Is Slavery – Levi Fuller & the Library

When Chris Estey talks, we listen.

Especially when the topic of conversation is about Levi Fuller: musician, Jack Straw man, KEXP writer, client of Mr. Estey, and all around good fellow.

Levi’s new music video for the song, “Freedom is Slavery”, off the new record, The Wonders That There Are, draws you in and has you scratching your head. Yes, it’s internet and yes, it’s kittens. But unlike all the memes out there that are a one-take and move on, and unlike all the surreal videos out there that often leave you wondering, “What the hell did I just look at?”, this one has a point and it makes it over and over again.

Says Chris of the new record, “It is is eleven diverse expressions of creeping alarm and awkward enchantment.”

It’s like that crab in a bucket idea, but fluffy and cute and still a matter of life and death. As Levi puts it himself, “This song was written for a Bushwick Book Club show on Orwell’s 1984.” Indeed, no small task.

Levi worked with Kevin Suggs on this record. Kevin has worked with in the past Eddie Vedder and Cat Power, to name a couple. “I think I first met him when he played pedal steel with Amateur Radio Operator, and have bumped into him over the years here and there, including at his main day job as an engineer at KEXP,” notes Levi, who also puts out the regular wonderful Ball of Wax music compilations.

So, check out the video and the album and maybe even go see Levi Fuller & the Library play their next gig, Thursday Aug. 28 at 8pm at Lo Fi.
