BIG DEAL – r l white

Oh boy, just wait until Johnny finds out! Mike got a new bike for his birthday, all shiny and new, not like the hand-me-downs I always get. This one sparkles and has streamers flying from the handlebars!

I can’t wait to ride it. I’ll take long trips when Mike leaves it at the house. It’s so fast, I bet it can fly down the street!

Boy, Johnny will be surprised. He sure will be happy. I can’t wait to tell him about it. He’ll probably take a trip himself.

“Johnny guess what!” I cry, running up to him.

Johnny turns his bruised face towards me, his right eye swollen shut.

My smile evaporates and I can’t recall what I have to say: Mike’s new bike! Reluctantly, I tell him of our good fortune.

“Big deal.” Johnny growls.

“Yeah,” I agree. “Big deal.”
