Babies or Books – J. Oscar Franzen

The first kid would cost me
José Saramago’s Blindness.
Have me freezing teething rings.
Whiskeying gums.
Squeaking out crusted crud from earbacks.
Toe mishmash.

The second kid would cost me
Tracy K. Smith’s Life on Mars.
Have me burpclothed on both shoulders.
Like epaulettes on a defeated general
surrendering.

Bio:

J. Oscar Franzen workshopped in Texas A&M University's creative writing program, earning a Master of Arts in English. He is now a student at the University of Washington.

What am I?

Bioluminescent eye
That sees by the shine
Of its own light. Lies

Blind me. I am the seventh human sense
And my stepchild,
Consequence;

Scientists can't find me.

Januswise I make us men;
Glamour
Was my image then—

Remind me:

The awful fall up off all fours
From the forest
To the hours…

Tick, Tock: Divine me.
