More Than A Thousand And One: The Many Faces Behind The Faceless Howler
Thursday, April 14, 2016 16:52 — 14 Comments
One of the greatest misconceptions among Lovecraft fans is that his creation, Nyarlathotep, has only a thousand forms. The idea stems from the novella Dreamquest Of Unknown Kadath, in which Nyarlathotep appears as a Pharaoh, giving the story’s protagonist a warning, “pray to all space that you may never meet me in my thousand other forms.” What readers tend to overlook is the key word “other” i.e. that in addition to the slender Pharaoh there are also a thousand others… for a grand total of a thousand and one. I went on a dream-quest of my own, looking for the illusive one, […]
New Pee-wee Herman Movie, ‘Big Holiday,’ Shines
Monday, April 4, 2016 11:39 — 0 Comments
Among the many laugh-inducing scenes in the new Netflix original film Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, one particularly stands out: Pee-wee Herman (played by Paul Reubens) is out on a journey to reconnect with a friend (a hunky Joe Manganiello) in New York City and Pee-wee finds himself in Amish country where he’s asked what he does for fun. To answer, he pulls out a balloon and blows it up so big he gets dizzy, then for longer than two minutes he slowly releases the air from the balloon, half flatulence, half musical instrument. We’re not sure what the Amish reaction is, but […]
Instagranimals – Kelsi Kosinski
Monday, March 28, 2016 15:09 — 1 Comment
New Jersey-based artist, Kelsi Kosinski, maintains an enviable balance of humor and wisdom in her work. Her series, Instagranimals, is evidence of this through and through. Combine the head of a rhino with the casual allure of a woman making her way home after late night out? Sure! Mix the heads of frogs with the bodies of selfie-taking beach bums? Awesome! This is the work of Kosinski, who brings the viewer in with the sublime and keeps her there with thoughtful depth. And because her work is so fabulous, we wanted to chat with Kosinski about her inspirations and her art. Enjoy! Jake Uitti: […]
A Part Of Living: The Deadly Art Of Ego
Wednesday, January 27, 2016 13:48 — 0 Comments
In contemporary culture the word “ego” has become synonymous with the word “vanity,” but Freud defined the ego as the functional self, working as a moderator between the internal world of fantasy and the external world of cultural norm. I met a man named Ego, expecting him to be as egotistical as the contemporary fallacy, but was surprised by his refreshingly moderate nature. Although you’d never hear it from him, Ego Shoreclay is a successful painter, tattoo artist and graphic designer, who’s finely detailed explorations in the macabre are sought after by collectors world wide. I wanted to ask him about his work, but felt a […]
Capitol Hill Season 2
Wednesday, November 4, 2015 1:01 — 0 Comments
The spiral of subversion suffused in the Wes Hurley creation known as Capitol Hill manifests itself mostly in two topics: the treatment of Portland, Oregon, where NO ONE SHOULD GO WATCH OUT IT’S A TERRIBLE PLACE OH MY GAWD! and in Marc Kenison’s acting, which is superb, as a rube gender-matrix. The ever-manipulated interplay between masculine and feminine, between sex and novice, between understanding and disbelief that runs through the Capitol Hill storyline and its characters pushes the webisodes forward with such a, well, thrust that it’s impossible not to want to watch more to try and understand what’s at the […]
In The Midst Of Monsters: An Interview With Nick Gucker
Tuesday, September 29, 2015 9:08 — 0 Comments
Nick Gucker is an illustrator, graphic designer and lifelong fan of horror and science-fiction. He’s known professionally as Nick The Hat and though this term of endearment is in no way related to the many hats he’s worn during an exciting and prolific career, he is a man of many talents, not the least of which is his appreciation for the bizarre. He’s the caretaker of his own night-gallery, a menagerie of taxidermied, canned and cured critters. He’s collected morbid masks from exotic kingdoms as far east as Bali and a bestiary of yokai monsters from the land of the […]
Fashion Fascist Drawings – Allen Forrest

These drawings express the frustration felt by many in the current consumer culture, which says citizens have all the power but really it’s the few uber-rich who hold the cards. Says the artist, Allen Forrest, “I came up with the drawing style for this piece by combining influences from William Steig and Robert Crumb and [offering] my own take.”
Feast Arts Center: a New School
Tuesday, August 11, 2015 9:36 — 0 Comments
Artists and co-parents Todd Jannausch and Chandler Woodfin are in the midst of creating a new art school in Tacoma, WA, called Feast Arts Center. Says Woodfin, a painter, “The guiding concept at Feast is the belief that community involvement enriches personal experience, that personal experience informs art-making, and that art-making strengthens communities. So how do we do that? Well, we believe that we achieve this by providing a place where community and art-making can merge.” The school will provide free community events, including offering free meals, supplies and studio time to those “in need,” says Woodfin, as well as outdoor […]
Spek On Marvel
Tuesday, August 4, 2015 22:30 — 0 Comments
Along with being one of the dopest rappers and producers in the town, Matt ‘Spek’ Watson is one of the most well-versed Marvel/superhero aficionados I know. We had a chance to talk about his suspicion of the new Fantastic 4 movie, his love of Deadpool and our shared curiosity at why there’s hardly ever any good bad guys in these big superhero flicks.Â

Lexi Lee makes stunning, homemade jewelry. Knowing Lexi some, she is the type to take extra care to make sure the piece is ready and beautiful before sharing it with the world. Given this, it’s clear that, along with being excellent with craft, she’s also prolific. We had a chance to chat a bit with Lexi about her work and to show off some of the pretty pieces, which you can buy here.
The answer isn't poetry, but rather language
