The Misadventures Of Billy: The Irredeemably Iconoclastic Goat
Friday, December 2, 2016 1:18 — 2 Comments
Once upon a time there was a goat named Billy. Billy was sad, Because Billy didn’t fit in. Billy had hopes, And Billy had dreams. Billy could see yesterday, and imagine tomorrow. People made fun of Billy, and they imagined nothing. Billy wrote, and Billy drew. But no one read and no one knew… That today is based on yesterday, And tomorrow is based on today, And “now” is only fleeting.
Seattle Superheroes: Manny Chao

Georgetown Brewing might make the finest beers on the west coast and one of the people behind the brewery’s success is Manny Chao, for whom Manny’s Pale Ale is named. Chao, when he’s not brewing some of the world’s best beer, fights crime, keeping the city safe from those who would try to hurt its most vulnerable (like this creature he’s secured in a beer bubble). In his work life, though, Chao and Georgetown make beers that are smooth, crisp and always on point, whether that’s their Chopper’s Red Ale, Manny’s Pale Ale or their award winning Bodhizafa IPA, which […]
Protecting The People: Copwatching With Mike BlueHair
Thursday, October 13, 2016 11:27 — 10 Comments
After nearly five years of being filmed and observed by him, Portland police know he can’t be intimidated… they also he’s not going away. We’ve seen his videos in The Oregonian, The Portland Mercury, and in Willamette Week, showing him standing between chaos and bloodshed when a gun was pulled on BLM protesters downtown. But have we ever really seen Mike BlueHair? I met up with the local copwatcher for an interview, a ride-along, and a closer look at the man behind the camera. Not everyone knows what copwatching is, so I asked Mike to define the term in his own words, “A copwatcher,” he said, […]
Art From Adam Rousseau
Tuesday, October 11, 2016 23:54 — 0 Comments
Adam Rousseau’s art is striking, charming and, despite its intricacies, is easy on the digesting eye. As such, we wanted to feature some of his drawings here and ask him three important questions. Enjoy! Jake Uitti: When you sit down to draw, what goes through your head? Adam Rousseau: Most of the time when I’m working I’m really just trying to shut out any extraneous thought and focus on what’s happening on the page/wood panel. It’s very meditative for me in that sense. Music is essential for me getting anything done as well, and I think sometimes what I end […]
Seattle Superheroes: Kshama Sawant
Tuesday, September 27, 2016 11:26 — 0 Comments
Seattle Superhero, Kshama Sawant, has been doing her Robinhood thing in the Emerald City for years as a member of the City Council. She helped spearhead the $15/hr minimum wage campaign that city voters adopted and has been pushing for income and housing equality, as well as police oversight in the wake of the absurd proposed youth jail and police bunker. Sawant, in this time of ugly Presidential debating, is a politician worth celebrating. Art by Jill Denkmann
Seattle Superheroes: Andrew Joslyn

Master composer, Andrew Joslyn, has been adding his expertise to music all over the Emerald City, including tracks on The Heist and tunes by indie darling, David Bazan. Joslyn influences music culture in and out of the city and, in his spare time, fights evil doers with his magic violin. In short, the strings follow his very command. Art by Marc J Palm.Â
Allen Forest: Ink and Noir
Thursday, September 8, 2016 12:41 — 0 Comments
Allen Forest creates thoughtful, distorted images of people he encounters. And we wanted to show them off. So, below are ten images followed by a little Q&A with the artist. Enjoy! JU: What moments of inspiration helped create this work? AF: I was captivated by Vivian Maier’s photographic work and I decided to do a series with my own interpretations of her characters in her city settings. Eventually I went out and shot my own in Vancouver using different locales and the people there. I was particularly interested in candid situations and expressions, no posing. So I did candid camera. I walked […]
Seattle Superheroes: John Osebold

Hello and welcome back to our regular series, Seattle Superheroes, which has taken incarnations on several different sites but now lands here at home with The Monarch. This week’s installment features one of our favorite Emerald City personalities, John Osebold. It’s no hair-brained scheme to reach out and ask Seattle Superhero, John Osebold, for a hand. Or a follicle. The man – who dons the cape of musician, comedian, writer and artist – without much effort will wrap up any foes and take them to justice. He’s so badass he’ll wig you out! Seattle Superheroes: ‘Cave Sean’ De Tore
Wednesday, August 17, 2016 11:28 — 0 Comments
Hello and welcome back to our regular series, Seattle Superheroes, which has taken incarnations on several different sites but now lands here at home with The Monarch. This week’s installment features one of our favorite radio personalities, Sean De Tore, in all his selfless sacrifice-to-make-the-world-a-better-and-safer-place glory. Here we see Sean, mild-mannered, at home in his apartment when disaster strikes. The saber-toothed cat has escaped from the laboratory and Sean needs to protect his fellow citizens. Blessed with super strength and a fearlessness only born out of the streets of New Jersey, where Sean is originally from, he dashes out of the […]
Perry (Porter) Paints

I was assigned to write about the Seattle hip-hop duo, Sleep Steady, for the Seattle Times a few weeks back. And one of the last lines in the piece reference’s rapper Perry Porter’s freelance art – which I found out later were vibrant and dynamic images of the human face and form. Immediately, I wanted to show his work here on The Monarch. So, let’s get to it! Just for fun, peep Sleep Steady’s video here to listen to while sorting through the images.
The answer isn't poetry, but rather language
