Our dear friends Sean De Tore and Rachel Belle (both of KIRO Radio fame) went down to Austin, TX over the summer to compete in – and document – the O. Henry Pun Championships. Aided by donations via a Kickstarter campaign, the two brought cameras and their plucky personalities to the event and even landed some home run puns. Check out the teaser trailer for their 2014 documentary Punster here:

Julien Perry is the editor of Eater Seattle. She is also the co-founder of the One Night Only Project. She has also held many jobs in the media, focused on the food world, from Urbanspoon to the Seattle Weekly. As a result, we wanted to ask her about the Seattle food scene – specifically, what she’s seen and observed! Bon appetit! Â
The Monarch Drinks With Bruce Pavitt

By the time we’re cracking open fortune cookies, Bruce Pavitt and I find ourselves talking about Kurt Cobain and the idea of seclusion. That someone like Kurt, beautiful and stirring, at the height of world fame, needed the confidence and compassion of an inner circle of people to talk with. Kurt never seemed to have that—for whatever reason—says Bruce, solemnness to his voice.
The Monarch Drinks With Sir Mix-A-Lot

I sat down with Anthony Ray – better known as the rapper/producer Sir Mix-a-Lot – in a booth in the back of Daniel’s Broiler on the 21st floor of a Hyatt in Bellevue, WA. He’d chosen the place for our interview, a fan of fine steaks. Mix is talkative, with a steady demeanor. He’s lived the gamut from want to have, violence to security. And I can only believe that, given this history, he’s developed a sort of calm when speaking his mind.
One Super Important Question For Stephanie Drury

Stephanie Drury, along with running the site Stuff Christian Culture Likes and the Twitter handle @fakeDriscoll, is also The Monarch’s resident Religion correspondent. So, given all the hubbub on Tuesday about an Ask Mark Driscoll campaign on Twitter, we just HAD to ask Stephanie One Super Important Question.Â
The Monarch Drinks With Riz Rollins

The first thing you should know about Riz Rollins is that he’s a charming motherfucker. No less than a dozen people stopped and talked to us while we sat inside and then outside Pettirosso in Capitol Hill on a sunny, unseasonably warm September afternoon. Another dozen or so yelled his name or said hi while walking past. One guy stopped and said, “I can’t help touching you,†when a hug turned into some light petting. I was nervous to meet Riz, having known him on the radio since I moved to this area ten years ago and having experienced what […]

The Monarch Drinks With Kshama Sawant

For many Seattleites, the red signs that have sprouted up across the city, heralding a name that many have trouble pronouncing are a source of progressive pride. Kshama Sawant is running for a seat on the Seattle City Council as a member of the Socialist Alternative, and her campaign poses a credible threat to the city’s Democratic establishment.Â
Cannabis Connoisseur

This is Cannabis Connoisseur Michael Zabrek with the latest update in all things marijuana! First, though, a bit about me: I moved to Seattle in 2011 after earning a BA from the University of South Florida. I came here to integrate myself in the vibrant music scene and progressive attitude of Seattle. I work at a cannabis analysis lab by day and play music at night. I play keyboards with Mr. Slapface, Black Zabrek, The Bayous, and Miles the Cat. I also smoke pot.Â
The Monarch Drinks With Safeco
Monday, October 7, 2013 11:49 — 0 Comments
Desperate for shelter and disheveled by a cruel battery of autumn winds, the truth about baseball in Seattle was never clearer to me than when I was on my way to Safeco Field on the last Saturday of September 2013 – it’s a struggle. On the field, you know who the Seattle Mariners are? They’re a chronic complainer of a friend who, deep down, you know you hang out with because you pity them.
The answer isn't poetry, but rather language
