Pop Music Died with Kurt Cobain (but there aren’t enough shovels)

I went to hear Mike Dumovich perform tonight at the Royal Room in Columbia City. To my chagrin, I didn’t make it in time to hear Diminished Men opening, but I arrived just in time to catch Mike’s set from beginning to standing ovation end. It was a gorgeous hour of music. Backed by an accomplished array of musicians, Mike conjured twilight worlds and a host of glimmering figures that move within them. It was a delight to find a number of old friends in the audience afterward, many of them mainstays in Seattle’s music scene, and to know that […]
Our First Birthday
Tuesday, February 14, 2012 2:46 — 0 Comments
A year ago today The Monarch Review published its first poems, stories, essays and songs. Since then we’ve published over a two hundred works by writers, artists and musicians far and wide. We put out our first print edition late last year, and are hard at work putting together a second issue scheduled to hit the newsstands in early summer. We’re grateful to all our contributors and donors for their integral part in bringing this creation to life. To commemorate our first year we’re making the print edition available in PDF format. The link is provided below. TMR Print Edition […]
Happy Holidays, Seattle Art Museum
Saturday, December 24, 2011 16:58 — 0 Comments
Early this morning, the Seattle Art Museum received a gift on its doorstep, wrapped in a big red bow. Artist (and former Monarch visual arts editor) Todd Jannausch installed Gallery (206) at the foot of the Hammering Man, one of the city’s most recognizable icons, and left the following letter: Dear Seattle Art Museum, Artists are fortunate to have an institution like the Seattle Art Museum, which brings so much wonderful art to our city, expands our creative horizons, and encourages our artistic endeavors. To say thank you I would like to give you my installation piece, Gallery (206), as a gift. […]
47th Parallel Films: A Recession-Era Interview
Sunday, December 11, 2011 16:00 — 1 Comment
47th Parallel Films seems to be all over town, from Q & A’s at Gage Academy of Art and articles on City Arts Blog, to screenings at the Grand Illusion. It’s no wonder when considering director Shaun Scott’s prolific pace. He has created two provocative, full-length documentaries in as many years: the ambitious “Seat of Empire,†a critical view of Seattle’s political and economic development over the past century, and “Waste of Time,†a lyrically narrated, exquisitely edited, anti-consumerist montage. A third film, “100% OFF: A Recession-Era Romance†will be out in 2012, and represents a shift to fictional narrative and a larger crew, […]
Seattle: An Artistic/Cultural Community UNPRECEDENTED (if we really want it to be) – Evan Flory-Barnes
Saturday, December 3, 2011 15:33 — 3 Comments
*Note: I began this piece a year ago and, thankfully, I feel things have gotten even better since. Saturday, November 13, 2010: I am sitting here in Chaco Canyon Cafe, drinking my morning juice and coffee, contemplating the day and night before. Late last afternoon I met with a “classical” violinist and a “hip-hop, soul, r&b” vocalist to conspire and inspire a collaboration that I feel very excited about. After the meeting’s conclusion, I went to see a friend perform a very creative, inventive and engaging dance duet amidst a fashion show where the designers, ranging from ages 8 to […]
