A Very Alan Thickemas
Thursday, December 3, 2015 11:40 — 1 Comment
Whether we know it or not, we’ve all had at least a minor obsession with the actor, TV host and songwriter, Alan Thicke. We’ve seen him on middle-class sitcoms, hummed his tunes and sung his cheesy lyrics. The man who was famous for the fatherly role of Jason Seaver on Growing Pains is also responsible for the theme songs for shows like Diff’rent Strokes and The Facts of Life. Thicke, though, is also the star and basis for the Seattle-based movie – and my new holiday season obsession – A Very Alan Thickemas, produced by Seattle-based film collective, The Beta […]

He’s a friend of the Monarch (which is awesome!) and a thrower of great shows (like this one for MusiCares that we really suggest you get tickets for while they last). After you get your tickets to the show, check out these 14 bands and their outstanding records released this year! 1. Amos Miller- “SuperSquare†2. The […]
It’s Not Good for Anyone to Have a Body of Work Denied: An Interview with Stephen Wood
Tuesday, November 10, 2015 10:47 — 0 Comments
Stephen Wood is a Vancouver-based musician who spent a good portion of this new century, as well as the end of the last, leading a band called the Battles, which he later renamed Giantess (for more on the Battles/Giantess – grab a comfy seat and read this). Wood also served as a sideman, playing guitar in the classic, pre-Merge Destroyer lineup that gave the world City of Daughters, Thief and Streethawk: A Seduction. His latest project, which serves as the jumping off point for this interview, is an instrumental duo called Kensington Gore (named after the famed recipe for fake […]
Fine Prince at Timbrrr!
Tuesday, November 3, 2015 7:59 — 0 Comments
Jamie Henwood plays in a band you’ve never heard of, until now. He’s a quiet fellow who prefers, above all things, to sit on his porch contemplatively, sipping a mug of coffee or a pint of beer (depending on the hour of the day) but he’s also the sort of person to pick up a guitar (he plays a hollow body Epiphone ES 339) and write a song rich with electricity and synths with his new band, Fine Prince. The group, which will be playing Timbrrr Winter Music Festival this year, got together in 2014 when Henwood, who has been […]

Three Songs from Jimmy Pitts
Monday, September 21, 2015 12:32 — 0 Comments
I’ve known Jimmy for a number of years now, both as a musician and bartender at Cafe Racer. He and I both live and work in the Ravenna/Roosevelt district and we both jog around the neighborhood trying to offset the not-so-healthy things we do with some healthy habits. Jimmy’s aesthetic as a musician, I’ve come to know, is DIY and his sensibilities for composition are varied, playful and strong. Recently, he sent some tunes to The Monarch and we chose three to feature here. So, without further ado, here are three songs from Jimmy Pitts for your enjoyment! Demo Club ’15 by […]

Three Songs To The Head vol. 33
Thursday, September 3, 2015 9:16 — 0 Comments
Hello and welcome back to Three Songs to the Head where we share three songs that moved us, three songs we love, three songs we can’t get out of our heads! Today, we’re featuring Raz Simone, The Honorable Chief and The Bad Tenants. Enjoy! –Jake Uitti Raz Simone has a kingly quality. He’s somehow supremely reserved and uber-powerful. He has keen judgement in production, courage to say what’s on his precise mind (even if it goes against the Emerald City’s most well-known rapper) and, at the same time, the ability to move people with strength of heart. There’s an effortlessness […]
