Moderately Funny

I love a good mustache joke.

Cruising Facebook one afternoon, I stumbled upon a sketch an old friend, Noah Savage, performed in. So I clicked on it. Noah and I used to play basketball together in high school. The level of competition was high and we worked hard every day. In the time since high school, I moved to Seattle to pursue creative endeavors and Noah went on to play for Princeton University, hitting a bunch of 3-point shots. Now, he works as a game announcer and aspiring comic. The fact that we both ended up following creative avenues is interesting, since we, essentially, played the same position in high school. All of this brings me back to how I started this piece: I love a good mustache joke! When I saw Noah pull off a fabulous mustache gag in the following sketch, I knew I had to write about it for The Monarch:

Moderately Funny is written and produced by Dan Perlman, which he co-founded with his friend Kevin Iso. They film every Saturday and post new videos every Sunday – a diligent work schedule. “We’re just trying to live up to the low bar we’ve set with our name,” says Perlman. “We work with many talented comedians, who are encouraged to improvise, though all of the lines and beats are scripted. We wanted to make a series where we had the freedom to create whatever – quick one-joke videos, sketches with a clear game, recurring character-based shorts. It’s just fun making things. ‘Moderately Funny’ gives us one umbrella where we can make something new every week, in a non stand-up format, and reach a different audience.”

Here is another Griff Chilton/Noah piece:

And another!

“On a personal note,” says Perlman, “Noah and his ‘Griff Chilton’ character has no doubt been my favorite character to write for, and my favorite part of the series. His instincts are so great and he just kills it in his videos. Noah also comes up with great ideas for beats and jokes for the character, which he named. I sorta imagine Griff as what Noah would be like if he never tried comedy.”

The Moderately Funny crew have many more videos to check out here. They are working hard and, thankfully, writing more mustache gags.
