Band In Seattle: Acid Angels and Big Sur

Every Saturday night at 11PM on KSTW (Channel 11 in the Emerald City), Band In Seattle broadcasts their newest episode. This week the  TV show, which features local musicians’ music and interviews, will present  Acid Angels and Big Sur. To get a little insight into the program, we asked BIS founder Conrad Denke about what’s coming up this week.

Jake Uitti: What’s special about this week’s episode with Acid Angels and Big Sur?

Conrad Denke: I interviewed Kelly Wheeler, the leader of Acid Angels on the top of a roof of a house in West Seattle. There he was with all his tattoos, two sculls on each side of his neck, dark black hair and hammering away with his air nailer putting down shingles on the roof. He has his own company: Silver Star Roofing, and at least that day, he was the only employee. After listening to his stories for a while, I could see that he’d been down a few roads in his music career – good and not so good. He’s seen enough that he doesn’t worry anymore about where it’s going so much. He’s just happy to be on the journey.

I also interviewed Jake Hemming, the lead guitar, vocalist and songwriter for Big Sur as he drove around the Woodinville area North of Seattle. Jake is another person who loves what he does. Music just seems to flow out of him like the most natural expression you could imagine. I remember the first time I heard Big Sur and Jake. It was one of the living room shows put on by the Watt sisters. I was deeply touched and could see that Jake’s music and words should reach many more people than he has so far. Jake had just recovered from some extensive back surgery where he almost lost his ability to speak or sing. But the Music Gods must have wanted him to continue his work, because he came out very well and his music has matured even more because of his own challenges in life. As soon as I could, I booked him for “Band in Seattle.”
