Phillipp W. Aurand
Self
23″ x 31″ – acrylic, aerosol, pen & marker (sold)
Is it possible to see the self without losing it first?
Is it possible to see anything without the filter of the I?
What causes me to believe that a regular moment in nature is a spectacular event put on just for me? Do you know the sight, when the wind blows just so, lifting and twisting the leaves of a tree to show off the normally shaded underbelly’s of it’s green leaves? When that wind causes a sort of flicker, shimmer and dance in this sudden gust?
Each and every time I see that moment my ego urges the sight to be for me alone. It says, how lucky I was to see that which no other can see. And, every time feel grateful.  I pat myself on the back for being willing, awake and there. I grip my hand around some fictitious ticket that bought me the best seat in the house and acknowledge that when curtains were drawn and the show began I was there to see it.
It is said in art training that any portrait drawn by an artist is in some form a portrait of the self, of the artist. I believe that this is both true and unfair. All that we do is through the filter of the self and the I. Setting that aside, we depict what we see because of the fire that drove us to put hand to paper. The rest is the story, the art and the show.
And so, I introduce Phillipp’s cast of characters, agents and their commentary.  In his work Phillipp seeks to describe a universal reaction to the urban landscape and person while also isolating them into some unattainable versions of us depicted through his lens, like reflections.
