Mo’Fun
It’s so good, I almost don’t want to tell you about it.
Mo’Fun, the lesser-known best monthly food event in Seattle, embodies everything dining out ought to be: pleasantly familial atmosphere, comradely wait staff – and food you really want to eat.
The once-a-month rotating popup menu, held at various restaurants, but now mostly in the Fremont neighborhood, is an early-in-the-week (albeit late in the eve) gig geared towards food industry folk, giving hosting chefs (Fremont Fire Pit’s Jake Wilson and The Backdoor at Roxy’s Jeff Davidson) a chance to bring in (and impress) fellow workers, family, and friends.
It’s like being let in the back after-hours; with that exclusive, in-the-know sort of feel to it – except, it isn’t. In fact, the front door is wide open – to restaurateurs and nine-to-fivers alike.
This month, new Chef-on-the-(Fremont)-block Wilson showed his skills at the Fire Pit (where he is currently running the kitchen) with a single-page menu of seriously meritorious BBQ fare. “It’s for my owners, my crew, and fellow co-workers—to show them what I’m capable of,†says Wilson.
Tuesday night’s spread included a watermelon caprese with grilled haloumi, jalapeno-honey hush puppies, and a surprisingly spicy buttermilk-jerk chicken served over mango slaw. A selection of boozy lemonades and the most dangerously light sangria kept us watered. Past menus have included succulent oysters on the half-shell, handmade ramen soup and piping hot roast duck hom bao.
“We want people to come to Mo’Fun and experience our vibe,†says Chef Davidson, “that laid back vibe where you keep it simple, use great ingredients, really nice product, high technique, and everyone is still able to enjoy themselves.†If you missed it this month, don’t worry, Davidson assures there is more to come: “Breakfast for dinner!†he says, “Everybody loves BFD!â€
Can’t argue with that. Look for September’s Mo’Fun at Roxy’s diner in Fremont.
