New Pee-wee Herman Movie, ‘Big Holiday,’ Shines
Monday, April 4, 2016 11:39 — 0 Comments
Among the many laugh-inducing scenes in the new Netflix original film Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, one particularly stands out: Pee-wee Herman (played by Paul Reubens) is out on a journey to reconnect with a friend (a hunky Joe Manganiello) in New York City and Pee-wee finds himself in Amish country where he’s asked what he does for fun. To answer, he pulls out a balloon and blows it up so big he gets dizzy, then for longer than two minutes he slowly releases the air from the balloon, half flatulence, half musical instrument. We’re not sure what the Amish reaction is, but […]
Instagranimals – Kelsi Kosinski
Monday, March 28, 2016 15:09 — 1 Comment
New Jersey-based artist, Kelsi Kosinski, maintains an enviable balance of humor and wisdom in her work. Her series, Instagranimals, is evidence of this through and through. Combine the head of a rhino with the casual allure of a woman making her way home after late night out? Sure! Mix the heads of frogs with the bodies of selfie-taking beach bums? Awesome! This is the work of Kosinski, who brings the viewer in with the sublime and keeps her there with thoughtful depth. And because her work is so fabulous, we wanted to chat with Kosinski about her inspirations and her art. Enjoy! Jake Uitti: […]
Apnea – Betty Stanton

I listen to him breathing until he stops suddenly in a gagging gasp, then silence that stretches too long before he begins to breathe again. The doctors say it is complex – tissue in the back of his throat collapsing, relaxing when it ought to tighten, his brain sending the wrong messages to the muscles that control his breath. He was tested. Sleeping pills in a strange bedroom, the slick pads of monitors taped to his skin, each breath a line in a computer. Afterward, he slept with a machine, worried when he would twist and turn that the thick […]

Okay, okay, okay. You’ve probably read here that we love Chris King & The Gutterballs. Their slinky, smokey, roadhouse swang. Well, then, listen up to this, will ya? The band is playing the Blue Moon Saturday the 19th. One of our favorite bands in one of our favorite venues! You may also know The Monarch loves the powerful voice of Robb Benson and the wicked guitar stylings of Mr. Tim Dijulio. Well, their rock band, Stereo Embers, is playing an instore at East Street Records also on the 19th at 7pm. So, if you’re an agile music fan, check out […]
Three Songs To The Head vol. 40
Monday, March 7, 2016 11:45 — 0 Comments
Hello and welcome back to Three Songs to the Head where we share three songs that moved us, three songs we love, three songs we can’t get out of our heads! Today, we’re featuring Sebastian and the Deep Blue, Fauna Shade and The Gin Joints. Enjoy! Sebastian and the Deep Blue have always been skilled at arranging. Utilizing big horns, jazzy guitars and lovely vocal mixes, the band creates detailed, thorough music. The first track from their new record Meritocracy, “Risk Reward,” is no different. The track bumps with big saxophones. It slinks with violins. And it impresses with […]
Love For The Craft: The Weird Tales Of W.H. Pugmire
Tuesday, March 1, 2016 10:47 — 1 Comment
In the early 1970s Seattle’s seekers of the macabre were stalked by Count Pugsly, a ghoulish vampire lurking in the horror-filled chambers of Jones’ Fantastic Museum. 20 years later that same bogeyman could be seen, in drag, washing dishes and busing tables at The Cyclops Cafe. Today a portrait of the ghoul hangs on the cafe’s cyclopean walls and I asked a cyclopean waiter if he knew who the face in the portrait belonged to, “His name is Wilum-” he said, “I haven’t seen him in quite a few years, but I know he’s still around.” Wilum Hopfrog Pugmire is still around, he may not […]
Barbarisms – Chelsea Dingman

No one wants to take the coffin-born fetus from the barn. From between the mare’s legs. They lay in tandem, their deaths a pact between bodies. Here, where all love ends in a gasp of cold air. In a house that knows only this cruel season. While I wait behind wood stalls and glass windows to see what becomes of a body. While I mouth the wrong names for gods. For another stillborn child, as my body stayed warm. As I was able to push her towards dying. As I kissed her slick forehead, blue eyelids. Perhaps, dream and memory […]

Job Tips: Selling Meat from a Truck – Paul Handley

First, get in a positive mindset. Then buy an unaffordable four dollar cup of coffee. Door-to- door salesman in our line always have a couple hundred dollars in cash to make change, so I would usually pull out a single to buy a lotto ticket along with my java. Next convert a shot in the basketball hoop installed in the warehouse with a difficulty level above five. Misses can be compensated by a weird bounce resulting in a satisfying wham into a meat-truck panel. Another option is to drive a golf ball off an apartment in the new complex that […]
