10 Reasons Why I Am Ending Class Early – Jessie Carty

1 – Before I arrived on campus, I saw lightning cradling the sky like a crescent.

2 – The theme to Reading Rainbow is stuck in my head, incessantly humming “I could fly twice as high!”

3 – During my dimly lit drive, I saw a tree breaking like a twig with no apparent “one” to do the bending.

4 – Someone in the room says “Not Me!” as if the storm was playing tag, going “clap on, clap off” with staccato power.

5 – There are no windows.

6 – It is an evening class.

7 – Someone says their weather app notes a tornado watch.

8 – Too many of us are wearing flip flops.

9 – “Take a look” at the rain on the windshield.

10 – Consider that rainbows don’t exist without first this.

    Thrilled to be a part of Monarch Review! I shared this poem with some 9th grade creative writers on a classroom visit recently and they went on to write their own list poem :)

What am I?

Bioluminescent eye
That sees by the shine
Of its own light. Lies

Blind me. I am the seventh human sense
And my stepchild,
Consequence;

Scientists can't find me.

Januswise I make us men;
Glamour
Was my image then—

Remind me:

The awful fall up off all fours
From the forest
To the hours…

Tick, Tock: Divine me.
