The following is an excerpt from Shaun Scott’s e-book “Something Better: Millennials and Late Capitalism at the Movies,†available on Amazon and iTunes from Thought Catalog Books. This holiday season marks the 25-year anniversary since the release of Home Alone. Millions of Millennials may grow nostalgic for the memories the movie evokes. Because no matter what became of Macaulay Culkin, Millennials will always see a part of themselves in Kevin McCallister. Home Alone begins when members of a giant extended family in Chicago take turns demeaning young Kevin McCallister. In the film’s breathless opening sequence, Kevin McCallister has his culinary […]

Slight by skyscraper standards, Seattle’s Space Needle stands 605 feet near the eastern shore of Elliot Bay: two-thirds as tall as the Eiffel Tower, and no match for the 1776-foot Freedom Tower built in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. But the building has cut a formidable figure as a civic symbol since its construction in 1962. The Space Needle has been celebrated: its alabaster color appears pristine when plastered on broadcasts of Monday Night Football, in Macklemore’s music videos, in the critically acclaimed films of Seattle-based directors Megan Griffiths and Lynn Shelton. And it has […]

With ratings revenue securely in hand from last week’s pilot episode, CNN’s as yet untitled smash hit television series revolving around dead black bodies in the street was renewed for another week. On Wednesday night’s installment, the setting was moved from rural Ferguson to New York City, where main character Eric Garner was left breathless on the hard, hot sidewalk by a gaggle of police officers back in July of 2014.Â

Shaun Scott and I love to talk art, movies and sports. Things get particularly spirited when we talk sports because children’s games played by adults in physical prime are something we’ve loved ever since we were kids on the east coast. So, here is one in our continued series, Sports Talk. This time, focused around an old picture of Michael Jordan that Shaun dug up.

As the twin towers of American cultural capitalism in the 21st century stood tall in Seattle’s Safeco Field last night, I imagine they felt something like the Seattle Mariners will when they return from their 6-game road trip to that same stadium: “Here we are. What’s next?†A 162-game baseball season that spans 3 seasons probably isn’t that different from a summer tour with 20 dates in 35+ days—at some point, rote professionalism overrides performance anxiety, and histrionic proceedings boil down to hitting one’s marks. Fielding a routine groundball to 3rd base that takes a tricky hop really isn’t all […]
